Televisa modernizes broadcast distribution with MEG

How Mexico’s leading broadcaster reduced costs and gained flexibility with a software-based primary distribution solution.

Overview

Televisa, Mexico’s largest broadcaster, embarked on a strategic initiative to modernize its satellite-based primary distribution infrastructure. With a nationwide footprint and a population of nearly 130 million, the company needed a solution that could support advanced monetization features such as dynamic ad insertion and regionalization, while remaining cost-effective and locally supported.

Quortex’s Media Edge Gateway (MEG) software enabled Televisa to deploy a flexible, software-only architecture on locally sourced hardware—avoiding high import duties and accelerating time to market.

The Challenge

Televisa’s legacy distribution setup limited its ability to introduce new capabilities like regional content customization and targeted advertising. The broadcaster also faced significant cost barriers due to import duties on foreign hardware, which could double the price of deployment. To maintain operational efficiency and control, Televisa prioritized working with local infrastructure partners.

The challenge was clear: find a software-based primary distribution solution that could run on existing hardware, scale nationally and support future enhancements—all without compromising performance or reliability.

The Solution: MEG by Quortex

The MEG software was deployed as a pure software solution on Televisa’s locally sourced server infrastructure. The platform was engineered and validated to meet the broadcaster’s performance requirements, enabling rapid deployment and seamless integration.

The project was completed in just a few months, with Quortex’s engineering and services teams providing hands-on support throughout the qualification and rollout process. The result was a tailored, cost-efficient solution that delivered best-in-class functionality for primary distribution.

Results

Televisa deployed 400 MEG endpoints across Mexico in the first phase of the project, transforming its broadcast ecosystem and laying the foundation for future enhancements. The solution delivered immediate benefits:

  • Significant cost savings by avoiding import duties
  • Accelerated deployment with fast qualification and support
  • Flexible architecture ready for ad insertion and regionalization

Looking Ahead

Televisa’s move to IP-based distribution is more than a technology upgrade — it’s a foundation for innovation. By embracing MEG, Televisa has positioned itself to respond faster to market demands, launch new services with ease, and maintain the high-quality delivery its audiences expect.

MEG empowers broadcasters to modernize at scale — even in markets with complex regulatory and economic conditions. Televisa’s success provides a proven blueprint for similar transformations in other regions facing comparable challenges.
